Why a Map in India's New Parliament is Making Its Neighbors Nervous

In a region already characterized by geopolitical tensions, the unveiling of a map inside India's new Parliament building has further heightened concerns among its neighboring countries. The map in question displays a concept known as "Akhand Bharat," which translates to "Undivided India" or "Greater India." While this term holds historical and cultural significance for some Indians, it carries a more contentious connotation for many of India's neighbors.

To India's neighbors, the concept of Akhand Bharat is seen as an incendiary and neo-imperialist idea that reflects India's territorial aspirations. The map encompasses not only the present boundaries of India but also includes territories that are currently part of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. This expansionist portrayal raises alarms among these countries, as it suggests a desire to redraw existing borders and assert dominance over the region.

The timing of this development coincides with other significant events in the region. Cyclone Biparjoy, a powerful storm that has been brewing in the Arabian Sea, is approaching the coasts of India and Pakistan. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated in preparation for the cyclone's landfall, which is expected to have severe impacts on the affected areas. While natural disasters like cyclones are not uncommon in the region, the simultaneous occurrence of this event with the heightened tensions surrounding the map in India's Parliament raises concerns about the potential for further strain on already delicate relationships between countries.

Moreover, recent controversies involving social media platforms have added another layer of complexity to India's international image. The Indian government's strong response to accusations made by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey highlights the ongoing battle between the government and certain online platforms. While the Indian government has the right to regulate social media activities within its jurisdiction, such actions have drawn criticism from those who perceive them as threats to freedom of expression.

India's economic growth has been a topic of interest and investment. The country's outsourcing sector continues to thrive, attracting foreign investors and driving economic momentum. However, concerns have been raised about the impact of India's arbitrary internet shutdowns on vulnerable communities that rely on the government's social protection measures. The disruption caused by these shutdowns disproportionately affects those living in poverty, exacerbating existing inequalities and hindering access to essential services.

Instances of ethnic violence and communal tensions within India also raise concerns about social cohesion and stability. The recent reports of violence and displacement in Manipur, as well as the expulsion of Muslims from a small town in Uttarakhand, highlight the challenges faced by marginalized communities and the need for greater efforts to promote inclusivity and harmony within the country.

In the midst of these complex dynamics, it is crucial for India's leadership to address the concerns of its neighbors and engage in constructive dialogue. Demonstrating a commitment to respecting the sovereignty and boundaries of other nations can help alleviate tensions and foster regional cooperation. Additionally, prioritizing social welfare measures, protecting freedom of expression, and ensuring inclusive development can contribute to internal stability and strengthen India's standing on the international stage.

India has the potential to be a significant player on the global front, attracting foreign investments and capital flows. However, realizing this potential requires a comprehensive approach that balances economic growth with social progress and diplomatic tact. By addressing the concerns of its neighbors and working towards resolving regional disputes, India can foster an environment of trust and cooperation that benefits the entire South Asian region.
